The Notorious B.I.G. (Christopher Wallace) died after being shot in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997.

He was riding in a Chevrolet Suburban near the Petersen Automotive Museum when a Chevrolet Impala pulled up alongside and the driver opened fire with a 9 mm handgun. Wallace was struck by four bullets and was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where doctors performed emergency surgery, but he was pronounced dead at about 1:15 a.m. at age 24.

An autopsy later showed that only one of the four shots was fatal, entering through his right hip and traveling through several vital organs before stopping in his left shoulder. His killing remains officially unsolved, though many accounts link it to the broader East Coast–West Coast rap feud of the 1990s.
