To know if chicken is bad, check for these signs:
- Color: Fresh raw chicken should be light pink with white fat. If it turns yellow, gray, green, or has mold spots, it's no longer safe to eat.
- Smell: Bad chicken emits a strong, unpleasant odor, often sour or like rotten eggs. Fresh chicken has little to no smell.
- Texture: Raw chicken may feel slightly slimy but not sticky or excessively slimy after rinsing. If it feels slimy, sticky, or mushy, it is likely spoiled.
- Expiry: Check the "sell by" or "best by" date on the package. Use or freeze raw chicken within 3-5 days of that date.
- For cooked chicken, it should be consumed within 3-4 days if refrigerated.
If in doubt, it's safest to discard the chicken to avoid foodborne illness.
