The odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are less than 1 in a million. Globally, about 2,000 people are struck every year, and around 90% of those survive. The risk is higher for people who spend more time outdoors, especially in areas prone to thunderstorms, and during summer months when thunderstorms are more frequent. The chance of being struck multiple times is significantly lower but not impossible. Specific behaviors and locations can increase or decrease individual risk substantially.
