There were 13 colonies in what became the original United States. These colonies were British colonies established along the Atlantic coast of North America. They are traditionally grouped as:
- New England Colonies: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut
- Middle Colonies: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware
- Southern Colonies: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia
These colonies existed during the 17th and early 18th centuries before joining together in the American Revolutionary War to form the United States of America.
