Approximately six million Jewish men, women, and children were murdered by the Nazi German regime and its allies and collaborators during World War II, in an event now known as the Holocaust. This genocide included mass shootings, poison gas killings at death camps, and deaths due to deprivation in ghettos and labor camps. About 2.7 million Jews were killed in Nazi killing centers such as Auschwitz, Treblinka, and others, while around 2 million were murdered in mass shooting operations, and hundreds of thousands died in ghettos and other violent acts outside camps. This number is supported by Nazi documents and demographic data and is the most widely accepted estimate of Jewish deaths in the Holocaust.
