Sloths poop about once a week. Both two-fingered and three-fingered sloths will only defecate once every five to seven days on average. This infrequent pooping is linked to their very slow metabolism and digestion, which can take up to a month to process a single leaf. When they do poop, it can be as much as a third of their body weight. Interestingly, sloths only poop on the ground, not from the trees where they spend most of their time. This means they have to make a risky and energy-consuming trip down from the canopy to the forest floor. This behavior makes them vulnerable to predators, and more than half of sloth deaths happen during this potty trip. The pooping process involves what is known as a "poop dance," where the sloth wiggles to prepare and sometimes digs a small hole before defecating. After pooping, sloths cover the pile and then climb back to the safety of the trees. Scientists still consider some aspects of this behavior a mystery, especially the evolutionary reasons behind the risks sloths take during this once-a-week event.
