A simple way to draw a Christmas tree is to start with basic shapes, then add details like branches, decorations, and color. Here is an easy step‑by‑step method you can follow with a pencil and paper.
Basic tree shape
- Lightly sketch a tall triangle in the middle of your page; this will be the overall shape of the tree.
- Draw a small rectangle at the bottom center of the triangle for the tree trunk.
- If you want a layered look, divide the big triangle into 3–4 stacked sections using slightly curved horizontal lines. Each section should be a bit wider than the one above.
Add branches and outline
- Along each side of the triangle, turn the straight edges into zigzag or bumpy lines to look like pine branches, letting them stick out slightly past the triangle.
- At the bottom of each layer, use short, uneven “V” or “U” shaped bumps to make the branches look fluffy and natural.
- Go over the outer edge of the tree and trunk with a darker line to make the final outline, and erase the inside guide triangle if you can still see it.
Star and decorations
- Draw a star on top: you can make a simple five‑pointed star, or draw a plus sign and an X on top of it, then connect the tips with small curves for a more decorative star.
- Add a wavy line that zigzags across the tree from top to bottom to represent a string of lights or garland. Then add small circles or ovals along the line as bulbs or beads.
- Scatter more small circles on the branches as baubles, and add simple shapes like candy canes (a “J” with stripes) or small gift boxes under the tree if you like.
Texture and details
- Inside each branch layer, draw a few short, curved or zigzag lines following the shape of the branches to give texture and show needles.
- Add a few vertical lines on the trunk to suggest wood grain.
- If you want the tree in a pot instead of a plain trunk, draw a trapezoid (wider at the top, narrower at the bottom) under the tree and connect it to the trunk.
Coloring your tree
- Color the tree itself in shades of green; you can use a darker green for the outline and shadowed areas and a lighter green for the inner parts.
- Color the star and lights in bright warm colors like yellow, gold, red, or orange, and use different colors for the ornaments so they stand out.
- Add a bit of darker color under the branches and around the trunk for shadows so the tree looks more three‑dimensional.
