To take a screenshot (ss) on a PC, here are several common methods:
- Press the PrtScn (Print Screen) key. This copies the entire screen to your clipboard. You can then paste (Ctrl + V) into an image editor like Paint and save it.
- Press Alt + PrtScn to capture only the active window. Paste it into an editor to save.
- Press Windows key + PrtScn. This captures the entire screen and automatically saves the screenshot as a PNG file in the Pictures > Screenshots folder. The screen will briefly dim to indicate a capture.
- Press Windows key + Shift + S. This opens the Snipping Tool overlay where you can select a rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip. The screenshot is copied to clipboard, and a notification lets you open it for editing or saving.
- Use the Snipping Tool app by searching for it via the Start menu. It provides options to capture, annotate, and save screenshots.
- Use the Xbox Game Bar by pressing Windows key + G , then clicking the camera icon in the Capture window.
If your keyboard requires it, you might need to press Fn + PrtScn instead of just PrtScn. These methods work on Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs.
