To turn off the voice on your Roku device, which is typically the Screen Reader feature that reads menu options aloud, you have two main methods:
Quick Shortcut Method
- Press the asterisk (*) button on your Roku remote four times quickly. This toggles the Screen Reader on and off immediately
Through Settings Menu
- Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Choose Screen Reader.
- Set it to Off to disable the voice narration
Additional Note: Descriptive Audio in Streaming Apps
If the voice you hear is narrating scenes during movies or shows (not just menu navigation), it might be Descriptive Audio (also called Audio Description) enabled within the streaming app itself. This is separate from the Screen Reader and must be turned off individually in each app's audio or accessibility settings. For example:
- On Netflix, press the Up button during playback and change the audio track from "English - Audio Description" to a normal audio track.
- On HBO Max, press the Star button and select an audio track without descriptive audio.
- On Hulu and Prime Video, similar audio language settings exist to disable descriptive audio
By using the remote shortcut or adjusting the accessibility settings, you can easily turn off the voice narration on your Roku device. If the voice is coming from a show or movie, check the app's audio settings for descriptive audio options.
