Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources that offer extra health benefits in addition to the basic nutritional value of foods. The term "nutraceutical" is a portmanteau of "nutrition" and "pharmaceutical". Nutraceuticals may be used to improve health, delay the aging process, prevent chronic diseases, increase life expectancy, or support the structure or function of the body. Examples of nutraceuticals include carotenoids, dietary enzymes, hydrolyzed proteins, mineral supplements, and phytonutrients. Nutraceuticals are not regulated in the same way as pharmaceuticals and are largely unregulated in the US, as they exist in the same category as dietary supplements and food additives under the authority of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
