The Barbarians rugby team is a British-based invitational rugby union club that brings together players from different clubs to play a few matches each year to enjoy the camaraderie of the game and play attacking, adventurous rugby without the pressure of having to win. The team was founded in 1890 by William Percy Carpmael, with the idea of creating a touring team made up of the greatest rugby football players from around the world. The Barbarians play in black and white hoops, though players wear socks from their own club strip. Membership is by invitation, and as of 2011, players from 31 countries had played for them. Traditionally, at least one uncapped player is selected for each match.

The Barbarians usually play six matches a year, and they have played in 25 countries since they were founded. They have played against major professional and national teams, and in the days of amateur rugby, the Barbarians produced some of the most thrilling games in the sport. The team has a reputation for playing rugby with flair, courage, spirit, and passion on the field. Many of the best rugby players in the world have represented the Barbarians at one time, and selecting the most famous would be a matter of opinion. In terms of appearances, Tony OReilly of Old Belvedere & Ireland made 30 appearances for the club from 1955-62 and scored 38 tries, the most by any Barbarian. Other notable players who have played more than 20 matches include Budge Rogers, Ron Jacobs, John Spencer, and Phil Bennett.

The Barbarians rugby team is not a professional team, and they do not compete in any league or tournament. They exist to celebrate rugby and bring together players from different clubs to play attacking, adventurous rugby without the pressure of having to win.
