Cats do not perceive the full range of colors that humans can, but their world is not entirely black and white. Cats color vision is primarily in shades of yellow, blue, and gray, although they tend to perceive more blue and greenish-yellow hues. They can recognize shades in the grey, blue, and green color palette, and they are especially good at seeing the grey undertones. Cats have two types of color receptors in their eyes: rods and cones. Rods handle how much they can see in the dark and their peripheral vision, while cones determine their vision during the day and their color perception. Cats have fewer cones than humans, which means they cant see the whole spectrum of light in all its vibrant hues. They cant see red, orange, and brown, and even the colors they can see dont appear in the same richness of hues and saturation that human eyes perceive, making the cat color spectrum much more muted than the human one.
