Imodium is a medication that treats occasional diarrhea. It contains an active ingredient called loperamide hydrochloride, which works by slowing down the movement of the gut. This decreases the number of bowel movements and makes the stool less watery. Loperamide is also used to reduce the amount of discharge in patients who have undergone an ileostomy and to treat ongoing diarrhea in people with inflammatory bowel disease. It treats only the symptoms, not the cause of the diarrhea, such as infection.
Imodium is available in different forms, including capsules, tablets, and liquid. The liquid form is only available on prescription. The tablets that melt on the tongue are called Imodium Instants or Imodium Instant Melts. Imodium Plus Caplets and Imodium Plus Comfort Tablets are the brand names for loperamide mixed with simeticone, which is used to treat farting (flatulence or wind) .
It is important to note that constipation may occur when taking Imodium, and if so, the medication should be stopped. It is also recommended to not give loperamide to children under 12 years old unless their doctor has prescribed it.
