The Al-Aqsa Mosque has been at the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for years. The mosque is located on a hill in the Old City of Jerusalem, which Jews call Har ha-Bayit or the Temple Mount and Muslims refer to as al-Haram al-Sharif, or the Noble Sanctuary. The compound includes the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, which is a seventh-century structure where the Prophet Muhammad is believed to have ascended to heaven. The mosque is considered the third holiest place in Islam after Mecca and Medina.

The recent events at the Al-Aqsa Mosque are related to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In May 2021, Israel conducted a raid on the mosque, which left many Muslims worldwide enraged. In response, the mastermind of the recent attack on Israel, Mohammed Deif, planned and named the operation "Al Aqsa Flood". The recent conflict began when a fringe fundamentalist Jewish group published calls to hold a Passover goat sacrifice at the sacred compound, where ancient Jewish temples stood thousands of years ago. Israeli police raided the mosque, used stun grenades, and indiscriminately beat Muslim worshippers, including elderly people and women, with batons and rifle butts. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that many people were injured, and Israeli forces prevented medics from reaching the mosque. The recent events have sparked protests and violence, with multiple casualties.
