Jack Trice was a football player who died due to injuries sustained during a game against the University of Minnesota on October 6, 1923. During the game, Trice suffered a serious shoulder injury in the first half but insisted he was still able to play. In the third quarter, he tried to perform a rolling block, but the Minnesota backfield overwhelmed him, knocking him to the ground and trampling him. Trice died two days later from internal bleeding and hemorrhaged lungs. The circumstances surrounding his death remain a mystery, but some believe he was targeted because he was African American. Trices story receded from memory in the decades after his death, but in 1957, an Iowa State student wrote an article about him for a student magazine, and in 1997, the stadium at Iowa State was named after him.
