According to several sources, Steve-Os voice is raspy because he uses a throat muscle to speak instead of his vocal cords as he should. Steve-O himself once believed his voice sounded that way due to his lifestyle, which included heavy drinking and drug use, in addition to stunts like chewing and swallowing glass. However, after becoming concerned about his voice's continued deterioration, he went to visit a throat specialist and learned the real reason behind the rasp. Steve-O's throat is apparently in good condition for a man that has been using it incorrectly his entire life. He has been working with a voice coach to retrain his voice to speak with his vocal cords and not his throat muscles.
