A bathhouse is a building where people can bathe. They can be communal, where people take baths together, or private, where people can rent a room or a locker. Bathhouses are usually dimly lit and play music, and some have an outdoors, enclosed rooftop or pool area. They are often laid out in a manner that allows or encourages customers to wander throughout the establishment; a space laid out in this way is often referred to as a "maze". Some bathhouses have a space where random, anonymous sex is all that can occur. Bathhouses have been used for hygiene, exercise, relaxation, and other activities that exist today under the greater wellness umbrella. Public baths originated when most people in population centers did not have access to private bathing facilities. In the United States, people built bathhouses, especially during the Progressive Era, when people thought the government should help people live better lives. People in the United States thought of being clean as part of being a good person, so rich and middle-class Americans built bathhouses for poorer people.
