A compact car is a vehicle size class that sits between subcompact cars and mid-size cars, predominantly used in North America. In Europe, it is known as a "small family car" and is part of the C-segment in the European car classification. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Fuel Economy Regulations for 1977 and Later Model Year defines compact cars as having an interior volume index of 100–109 cu ft (2.8–3.1 m3) . Compact cars are larger than economy cars but smaller than full-size sedans. They typically have a 4-cylinder engine and deliver great gas mileage and ease of handling and parking. Compact cars are good for commuting and road trips, and they offer good legroom, a generous amount of standard features, and good fuel economy.
