A Dobro is a type of resonator guitar that is owned by Gibson and manufactured by its subsidiary Epiphone. The term "dobro" is also used as a generic term for any wood-bodied, single-cone resonator guitar. The Dobro was originally a guitar manufacturing company founded by the Dopyera brothers with the name "Dobro Manufacturing Company". Their guitar design, with a single outward-facing resonator cone, was introduced to compete with the patented inward-facing tricone and biscuit designs produced by the National String Instrument Corporation.
Dobros have a cone for a mechanical type speaker with a spider bridge and a cover plate with sound holes. They are played mostly with a bar and with finger picks and a thumb pick. There are some people who use a flat guitar pick. While there are many instruments that look and sound like the Dobro, they all have different names, and the only one that says "Dobro" is a Dobro.
If you are interested in learning more about the Dobro, there are many resources available online, including videos on YouTube that provide an introduction to the instrument.
