A Francophone is someone who speaks French, especially someone who speaks it as their first or sometimes second language. The term "Francophonie" refers to the whole body of people and organizations around the world who use the French language regularly for private or public purposes. It can designate the group of countries that speak French, but also all the countries members of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. The term refers to countries that speak partially or fully the French language, and also includes countries that do not have French as an official language. The expression "francophonie" with a small "f" refers to populations and people who speak French for communication or/and in their daily lives. The term "true Francophones" refers to those who regularly use French as their first or second language, while "occasional Francophones" refers to those who seldom use it and have a limited ability. The majority of all French speakers live in Africa, and the Francophonie is an institution dedicated to promoting the French language and political, educational, economic, and cultural cooperation among the 88 member countries of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
