A shorkie, also known as a shorkie tzu, is a small and endearing hybrid breed resulting from the cross between a shih tzu and a Yorkshire terrier. They are a mixed breed dog, so no breed standard currently exists for shorkies, which makes it hard to predict which parent breed theyll take after in terms of appearance or temperament. However, ideally, a full-grown shorkie dog will achieve a happy balance of breed characteristics.

Shorkies are spunky, playful, energetic, loving, affectionate, and fiercely loyal. They tend to get along with the whole family, but they form the tightest bonds with their primary caretaker and will often stick to that person like glue. They are great with people of all ages and even do well in homes with small children. Shorkies are also known to be high-energy lap dogs that enjoy cuddle sessions just as much as play sessions and may want to get involved in your daily activities.

Keep in mind that shorkies are half terrier, which means they can be a little high-strung, but also highly intelligent. Their terrier tendencies also include a high prey drive that will have them chasing small animals and may cause them to dig. Both of their parent breeds tend to be willful, which can make training, including house training, a challenge; its best to start training as early as possible. Shorkies respond best to positive reinforcement and consistency.

Shorkies are small, spirited-yet-snuggly companions with a silky, allergy-friendly coat. They are best suited to small or single-person households, but can also do well in larger family environments. However, they have a tendency to be yappy, so if you are not a fan of noise, beware the shorkie. They make excellent watchdogs, alerting you of any passing people, animals, or even blowing leaves.
