The official mascot of the sports teams of the University of Oklahoma Sooners is the Sooner Schooner, which is a scaled-down replica of the Studebaker Conestoga wagon used by settlers of the Oklahoma Territory around the time of the Land Run of 1889. The Schooner is pulled by two white ponies named Boomer and Sooner. The mascots Boomer and Sooner are costumed mascots that represent the University of Oklahoma and the OU Athletics Department. They are an extension of the Sooner Schooner and its horses to be enjoyed by fans at all OU athletics contests. The characters are traditionally dressed in collegiate gear as part of their regular uniforms, but they also don team uniforms for football and mens and womens basketball games. The Sooner Schooner and ponies were introduced in 1964 and became the official mascot in 1980.
