A strobe light, also known as a stroboscopic lamp, is a device that produces regular flashes of light. It is one of several devices that can be used as a stroboscope, and the word "strobe" originated from the Ancient Greek word "strĂ³bos," meaning "act of whirling". Strobe lights can have a flash energy in the region of 10 to 150 joules, and discharge times as short as a few milliseconds, often resulting in a flash power of several kilowatts. Some strobes even offer continuous mode of operation whereby the arc is sustained, providing extremely high-intensity light, but usually only for small amounts of time to prevent overheating and eventual breakage of the flash tube.

Strobe lights have various applications, including as strobe beacons, which are flashing electric lamps used in a variety of industries as an attention-getting device, either to warn of possible hazards or to attract potential customers. Strobe lights are also used for aircraft anti-collision lighting both on aircraft themselves and also on tall structures such as towers and cranes.

In photography, strobe lights emit a bright burst of light akin to on-camera flash photography, but a strobe flash is brighter and produces a tremendously powerful burst of light. Strobe lights in photography are different from speedlights, which are smaller, battery-powered flashes that attach to a cameras hot shoe.
