AGR stands for Active Guard Reserve, which is a federal military program of the United States Army and United States Air Force. The program places Army National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers and Air National Guard and Air Force personnel in full-time positions to provide support to their respective organizations. AGR personnel may also be assigned to active duty roles in support of Regular Army and Regular Air Force organizations or joint organizations such as the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Secretary of the Army, Secretary of the Air Force, the Joint Staff, or the Unified Combatant Commands. Soldiers and Airmen in AGR status are commonly referred to as AGRs. They are in a different federal status than traditional part-time Army Reserve Component or Air Reserve Component members called to active duty for training, special work, operational support to the Active Component, or mobilized for contingency operations. The AGR program allows Soldiers transitioning off active duty the opportunity to compete for AGR positions closer to home. AGR Soldiers serve full-time and enjoy the same benefits as Active Duty Soldiers.
