In golf, an albatross is a scoring term that means three strokes less than the par rating of a specific hole. It is also known as a "double eagle" and is recognized as 3-under par. For example, if a golfer completes a par-5 hole utilizing just two strokes, they have scored an albatross. Albatrosses are incredibly rare, and only a handful of professional golfers have ever accomplished this feat in the sports history. The odds of scoring an albatross are estimated to be 6 million to 1. The term "albatross" is used to name a score three under par in agreement with the bird theme in golf scores. The bird albatross has one thing in common with 3-under par, and that is they are both rare. Notable golf players who have successfully hit albatrosses in their careers include Gene Sarazen, who was the first to make an albatross in a Major Championship, doing so at Augusta National Golf Club’s 15th hole in the 1935 edition of The Masters.
