The ermine (Mustela erminea) is a type of weasel that inhabits the temperate and arctic regions of Eurasia and North America. It is also known as the stoat, short-tailed weasel, or Bonaparte weasel. Ermines are slender, agile, and voracious mammals that measure 13 to 29 cm (5 to 12 inches) in head and body length, have a tail length of 5 to 12 cm (2 to 4.7 inches), and weigh less than 0.3 kg (0.7 pound) . They are territorial and intolerant of other ermines in their range, particularly those of the same gender. Ermines feed on small mammals, birds, eggs, frogs, and occasional invertebrates. They are hunted regularly for their pelts, which are often used to trim coats and other clothing. Ermines are also known for their color-changing fur, which is brown in summer and white in winter, except for the black tail tip. Ermine fur was used in the 15th century by Catholic monarchs, who sometimes used it as the mozzetta cape.
