Ghana has more than seventy ethnic groups, each with its own distinct language. The six major ethnic groups in Ghana are the Akan, Ewe, Ga-Adangbe, Mole-Dagbani, Guan, and Gurma. The Akan is the largest ethnic group in Ghana, accounting for 47.5% of the population, followed by the Mole-Dagbon at 16.6%, the Ewe at 13.9%, the Ga-Dangme at 7.4%, the Gurma at 5.7%, the Guan at 3.7%, the Grusi at 2.5%, the Kusaasi at 1.2%, and the Bikpakpaam a.k.a. Konkomba people at 3.5% . The Akan ethnic group is further divided into subgroups such as Asante, Fante, Akwapim, Akyem, Akwamu, Ahanta, Bono, Nzema, Kwahu, and Safwi, among others. While Ghanas ethnic communities have traditional homelands, internal migration has rendered these regions somewhat less relevant over time as ethnic communities have become intermingled throughout the country.
