HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container, which is a container format for storing individual digital images and image sequences. It is an updated variant of the High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF) and is used by Apple as their standard file format for images on their mobile devices. HEIC files can store images encoded with multiple coding formats, for example, both SDR and HDR images, and can hold multiple images in one file, which means less storage taken up with photos on your device or in the cloud. HEVC is an image and video encoding format and the default image codec used with HEIF. HEIF files containing HEVC-encoded images are also known as HEIC files. HEIC files are half the size of JPEGs and can offer the same high-quality images, plus the ability to support 16-bit color for more flexible editing. However, not all operating systems recognize HEIC files yet, which could cause compatibility issues.
