An IMU stands for Inertial Measurement Unit, which is an electronic device that measures and reports a bodys specific force, angular rate, and sometimes the orientation of the body, using a combination of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and sometimes magnetometers. It typically consists of gyroscopes to measure and report angular rate and accelerometers to measure and report specific force. IMUs are used to maneuver modern vehicles including motorcycles, missiles, aircraft, and spacecraft, including satellites and landers. They are also used in GPS devices to allow them to work when GPS signals are unavailable, such as in tunnels, inside buildings, or when electronic interference is present. IMUs are often incorporated into Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) which utilize the raw IMU measurements to calculate attitude, angular rates, linear velocity, and position relative to a global reference frame. IMUs are also essential components in the guidance and control of unmanned systems such as UAVs, UGVs, and UUVs. They are also used in sports technology for technique training and animation applications.
