Companion mode is a feature in Google Meet that allows users to join a meeting using two devices. It is primarily aimed at hybrid workspaces, where multiple people join a meeting from a conference room. They can use a secondary device to join the meeting in Companion mode to access features like chat, screen sharing, and more. Here are some key features of Companion mode:
-
Camera: When you join a meeting in Companion mode, your camera is turned off. Your tile is also hidden from the participant grid to make room for other video feeds. When you raise your hand in Companion mode, Meet displays your avatar and name followed by (Companion) to other participants.
-
Mic and meeting audio: Your mic and meeting audio are turned off in Companion mode.
-
Participant tiles: Your tile is hidden from the participant grid to make room for other video feeds.
-
Chat, polls, Q&A, and other Google Meet features: You can access these features in Companion mode.
To use Companion mode, you can join the meeting via your primary device and use your laptop as a companion device to take notes, chat with other meeting participants, and more. You can also quickly share your laptop screen in Companion mode. To end a Companion mode connection, click "Leave call" at the bottom of the meeting window.
