A cord coil is not a term commonly used in medical literature. However, a nuchal cord is a condition that occurs when the umbilical cord becomes wrapped around the fetuss neck one or more times. It is a common condition that occurs in about 25% of pregnancies. Nuchal cords can be loose or tight and can be classified into two main types: Type A and Type B. Type A nuchal cords are free-moving and may come undone naturally, while Type B nuchal cords are wrapped in a way that does not allow them to come undone naturally. Nuchal cords can cause complications such as decreased blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients to the fetus, which can lead to fetal distress, oligohydramnios, preterm delivery, anemia, respiratory distress, and stillbirth. However, most nuchal cords will resolve before delivery, and even in cases where they do not resolve, the potential for problems is low. The main cause of a nuchal cord is excessive fetal movement, but other factors that might increase the risk of the umbilical cord wrapping around a baby’s neck include an abnormally long umbilical cord, a weak cord structure, excessive amniotic fluid, and having twins or multiples.
