A CV, or Curriculum Vitae, is a document used when applying for jobs that allows you to summarize your education, skills, and relevant work experience, enabling you to successfully sell your abilities to potential employers. A CV is an itemized list of a persons entire education, publications, accomplishments, notable projects, awards, honors, achievements, and professional experiences. It is a very in-depth document that describes your career journey step-by-step, including all sorts of personal information. A CV is universal in nature as it can be updated as you go, and there is no length limit for a CV, it all depends on an individual’s level of experience. A CV is often used in the education industry, and academia is often the only industry that will request a CV in the United States. In contrast, a resume presents a concise picture of your skills and qualifications for a specific position, so length tends to be shorter and dictated by years of experience (generally 1-2 pages). A resume is used for all professional industries except education. If you are applying for both academic as well as industry positions, you will need to prepare both a resume and a CV.
