The Glucose Management Indicator (GMI) is a metric used to estimate the laboratory A1C level expected based on average glucose measured using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) values. The GMI is calculated by taking the average glucose values from at least 12 days of CGM data and using a formula to estimate what the A1C is expected to be. The formula for calculating GMI is GMI (%) = 3.31 + 0.02392 x . The GMI may be similar to, higher than, or lower than the laboratory A1C, and differences between GMI and laboratory A1C may reflect differences among an individual’s red blood cell lifespan, how glucose binds to hemoglobin, or due to a recent fluctuation in glucose control. The GMI provides an indication of the current state of a person’s glucose management and can be used to help people with diabetes gain more insight into their glucose fluctuations and manage their diabetes better.
