It involves inserting a small tube called a catheter into a vein using a needle, which is then quickly removed once the plastic tube is advanced into the vein. The contents of an IV drip vary depending on the treatment being administered, but they usually include a sterile solution of water and salt to provide hydration and maintain electrolyte balance in the body, a sterile solution of water and glucose to provide energy to the body, and a variety of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are required for the body to function properly. IV therapy is beneficial because it enables water, medication, blood, or nutrients to access the body faster through the circulatory system, bypassing the gastric system so the body can take on more fluids quickly. It is used to treat severe dehydration by administering fluids, health conditions by administering medication, and pain by administering pain relief. IV therapy is generally safe, and side effects are generally non-existent or very mild, such as discomfort, bruising, itching, inflammation, or infiltration.
