Mange is a skin disease caused by a mite infestation that produces an adverse reaction in the cats skin. There are several types of mange mites, which are tiny arachnids that burrow under the top layers of skin and cause discomfort to the host. In cats, mange can be caused by ear mites, walking dandruff, Demodex mites, and Notoedres cati (feline scabies) . Notoedric mange, also referred to as Feline scabies, is a highly contagious skin infestation caused by an ectoparasitic and skin burrowing mite Notoedres cati. The symptoms of mange in cats include itching or scratching, sores/crusty skin, hair loss, and inflammation. The diagnosis of mites is made through skin scrapings of the affected areas. Certain antiparasitic drugs used to control mange include selamectin, moxidectin, ivermectin, and lime sulfur dips. Lime sulfur is the most commonly used and safe pesticide to control Notoedric mange on cats.
