Med Surg stands for Medical-Surgical nursing, which is a nursing specialty that focuses on providing care for adults who are either preparing for, or recovering from, a surgical procedure. Med Surg nursing is the number one nursing specialty in the United States, with the most healthcare professionals choosing to work in this field. Med Surg nurses are RNs (Registered Nurses) who care for diverse adult patient populations and treat a wide range of medical conditions. They work in acute care hospitals, though they make excellent clinicians in ambulatory settings, long-term care facilities, and home health as well. Med Surg nurses provide care for patients aged 18-108, and the medical conditions they encounter are just as broad. They perform a variety of pre- and post-surgical tasks to support patients who are ill or injured. In a hospital, a traditional Med Surg unit can be found with many rooms of patients who are preparing or recovering from surgery.
