Microsoft Copilot is an artificial intelligence assistant feature introduced by Microsoft on March 16, 2023. It is designed for Microsoft 365 applications and services, Edge, and Windows, and leverages the advanced capabilities of OpenAIs GPT-4 large language models (LLMs) . Copilot is integrated into Microsoft 365 apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, to help users unleash creativity, unlock productivity, and uplevel skills. It also incorporates Microsoft Graph to transform user text input into content across various Microsoft 365 applications. Copilot can be used in Teams to present information for upcoming meetings, transcribe meetings, and provide debriefs if users join the meeting late. After the meeting, Copilot can also summarize discussion points, list key actions deliberated in the meeting, and answer questions that were covered in the meeting.
Copilot is being marketed as an added feature to Microsoft 365, with an emphasis on business productivity. It is available for enterprise customers on November 1, 2023, and for other users this fall. Copilot will be integrated among different Microsoft products, and the release dates differ. Copilot will start rolling out on Windows 11 starting September 26 through a free Windows 11 update. Copilot will begin rolling out to Bing and Edge this fall.
