Permethrin cream is a medication used to treat scabies, a condition caused by tiny insects called mites that infest and irritate the skin. It belongs to a class of medications called scabicides and pediculicides, and it works by killing lice and mites. Permethrin cream is usually applied to the skin in one treatment, but occasionally a second treatment is necessary. It is for topical use only and should not be taken by mouth. The cream should be applied from the head to the soles of the feet, including under the nails and in skin folds such as between the toes, as directed. It is important to apply it everywhere on the body, not just where the rash is. The cream should be left on the skin for 8-14 hours and then washed off by showering or taking a bath. Skin irritation, including itching, swelling, and redness, may occur with scabies and temporarily worsen after treatment with permethrin. Mild burning or stinging may also occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, it is important to tell the doctor or pharmacist promptly.
