PV in pregnancy stands for Polycythemia Vera, which is a rare chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm that represents an additional thrombotic factor in pregnancy. It is not related to a pelvic exam, which is a physical and visual examination of the female reproductive and sexual organs. During pregnancy, pelvic exams are usually done early on to look for abnormalities and infections, and another exam is performed at around 36 weeks to check for changes to the cervix. However, some practitioners may want to do a vaginal examination at every prenatal visit during pregnancy for medical reasons such as a history of infertility, gynecological problems, painful intercourse, suspicion of cervical problems, or the need to check how favorable the cervix is if induction is necessary.
