Racial literacy is a concept that refers to the knowledge, skills, and awareness needed to talk thoughtfully about race and racism. It is a form of racial socialization and antiracist training that parents of African and Caribbean heritage use to teach their children how to recognize, respond to, and counter forms of everyday racism. Racial literacy is not just about understanding the legal definition of race, but also about recognizing how race impacts relationships, education, wealth, social status, cultural development, and personal identity. It involves having a rich vocabulary that includes terms such as race, racism, prejudice, ally, upstander, and so on. Racially literate people understand the reality of how race impacts society and have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to implement that understanding in teaching practice. Racial literacy is important because it allows individuals to recognize racist policies or attitudes, respond to them, and eradicate them from communities, even when they are not the group being discriminated against. It is a personal choice that individuals can make to open the door to action. Racial literacy is a process that will look different in each family and community, but it is essential to thriving within the world as it is while simultaneously striving to create an antiracist world together.
