There is an annular solar eclipse happening today, October 14, 2023. The eclipse will begin in Oregon as a partial solar eclipse at around 11:05 a.m. Eastern time, and annularity will occur around 12:16 p.m. Eastern time. The annular eclipse will then cross over the Texas coastline around 12:58 p.m. Eastern time, enter Mexico around 1:21 p.m., and pass over Central and South America for over two hours before ending on the coast of Brazil at 3:48 p.m. Eastern time. An annular eclipse occurs when the moon appears between the sun and Earth at its farthest point from the Earth, known as apogee. As the moon is farther away, it appears smaller and does not completely cover the sun, creating the "ring of fire" effect in the sky.
