The Medal of Freedom, specifically the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is awarded to individuals who have made an especially meritorious contribution to one or more of the following areas: the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural achievements, or other significant public or private endeavors. It is the highest civilian award in the United States and can be awarded to both U.S. citizens and non-citizens. The president decides who receives the award, which can be given posthumously and may be awarded multiple times to the same individual.
