As of April 1, 2023, the minimum wage rates in New Zealand are as follows:

• Adult: $22.70 per hour
• Starting-out: $18.16 per hour (80% of the adult minimum wage)
• Training: $18.16 per hour (80% of the adult minimum wage)

These rates apply to employees aged 16 years or over. There is no minimum wage for employees under 16, but all other minimum standards and employment rights and obligations apply. When an employee turns 16, they must be paid the relevant minimum wage.

It is important to note that if an employer has adult employees earning less than the minimum wage, they are legally required to pay the minimum wage. Employers who fail to pay the minimum wage may be subject to punishment by the New Zealand government.

If an employee thinks they are being paid less than the minimum wage, they should report this to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment by calling 0800 20 90 20. Migrant workers have the same minimum employment rights as New Zealand workers, including being paid at least the minimum wage.
