Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a medication that is used to treat heavy bleeding during menstrual periods. It works by slowing down or stopping the breakdown of blood clots, which helps to prevent bleeding. TXA is a synthetic reversible competitive inhibitor to the lysine receptor found on plasminogen. The binding of this receptor prevents plasmin (activated form of plasminogen) from binding to and ultimately stabilizing the fibrin matrix. The only FDA-approved usage for TXA is for heavy menstrual bleeding and short-term prevention in patients with hemophilia. It is also used for tooth extractions in patients with hemophilia as well as menorrhagia in these patients. TXA is most effective when given as early as possible and no later than 3 hours of injury or childbirth. It has a low side effect profile and is safe to use.
