The question "what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" was asked by a ruler to Jesus in Luke 18:18, and by a rich young man in Matthew 19:16. Jesus answered both by referring to the commandments, and in Matthew 19:21, he told the rich young man to sell his possessions and give to the poor, and then follow him. In Luke 10:25-28, Jesus answered the question by asking the man what is written in the Law, and the man answered by quoting the commandments. Jesus then told him to do these things and he would live. In Mark 10:17-31, Jesus told the rich young man to sell his possessions and give to the poor, and then follow him. Jesus also said that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. To inherit eternal life, we must be willing to put away the things of the world and serve the Lord with all our heart, might, mind, and strength. We must love God and love our neighbor as ourselves.
