For minor burns, it is important to cool the burn immediately by immersing it in cool tap water or applying cold, wet compresses for about 10 minutes or until the pain subsides. After cooling the burn, apply petroleum jelly two to three times daily to prevent drying and provide relief. Do not apply ointments, toothpaste, or butter to the burn, as these may cause an infection. Do not apply topical antibiotics. Cover the burn with a nonstick, sterile bandage. If blisters form, let them heal on their own while keeping the area covered. Do not pop the blisters. Applying moisturizer, aloe vera gel, or other pain relief gels may provide temporary relief. Do not slather on butter, as it retains heat and could be contaminated with bacteria. Keep the wound covered with a loose dressing to help it stay clean and decrease pain. If you have pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
