Pitru Paksha is a time when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors by performing rituals and offering prayers. Donating certain items during this period is considered auspicious and can help ancestors stay comfortable and bless their descendants. Here are some items that can be donated during Pitru Paksha:
- Cow (Gow Daan): This is considered the first and prime article amongst ten Mahadaan in Pitr Paksha.
- Land (Bhumi Daan): If affordable, a small portion of land can be donated to a poor person. If not feasible, a small piece of clay can be kept in a thali, and given to a Brahmin along with Dakshina.
- Sesame (Til Daan): Black sesame seeds are considered propitious for donation in Pitra paksha.
- Gold (Swarn Daan): If one does not have gold for donation, then Dakshina should be given to a Brahmin.
- Ghee (Ghrit Daan): Ghee made of cow milk should be donated in a pot.
- Clothes (Vastra Daan): Two main attires and two undergarments, which are not ragged and used one, better if the clothes are fresh, should be donated to a Brahmin.
- Cereals (Dhaany Daan): Wheat, rice, and other cereals should be offered after taking a Sankalp.
- Jaggery (Gud Daan): Donation of jaggery in Pitra paksha is also favorable.
- Silver (Rajat Daan): Ancestors bless their successors if they offer silver in Pitra Paksha.
- Salt (Lavan): Ancestors get pleased if salt is donated in Pitra paksha.
In addition to these items, donating food to underprivileged families during Pitru Paksha is also considered a noble endeavor. Donating to charitable organizations that feed the underprivileged can also be done in the name of ones ancestors.
