The Gold Coast Suns joined the Australian Football League (AFL) in the 2011 season. The club was officially founded in 2009 and was granted the licence to compete in the AFL in March 2009. They began playing in the AFL starting with the 2011 season, marking a major expansion of the league as the first new organization in almost 20 years.
