The Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) was formed in 1978. Initially, it started as a paramilitary police force, evolving from the Police Mobile Unit, and was officially recognized as an army in August 1979. Over time, it has participated in several internal conflicts and coups in Lesotho, serving primarily for internal security due to Lesotho's geographic situation, being entirely surrounded by South Africa which guarantees its external defense.
