Sloths live primarily in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. They inhabit the rainforest canopy, spending most of their lives high in the trees where they feed, sleep, mate, and even give birth. Sloths require warm, humid conditions and are found within about 17° of the equator in countries such as Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, and others. They prefer undisturbed primary and secondary rainforests but can also adapt to agroforestry ecosystems like cacao farms and sometimes urban areas near forests. Their habitat is mainly lowland rainforests, where they live in the canopy and only descend to the ground about once a week to relieve themselves
